The ABC’s Four Corners program was yet another not-so-transparent attempt to smear Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party on their program, The Carbon War (19 September 2011).
Anyone watching Four Corners could have been forgiven for not realising the rallies were organised by grass roots organisations and individuals. Not Liberal Party activists, not Menzies House, not Cory Bernardi, not Tony Abbott, not Alan Jones or 2GB. The ABC and Labor are in denial if they think the Liberal party or big business funds the carbon tax protests. They just don’t get it – these are ordinary Australians who are mad as hell about the carbon tax.
Four Corners was well aware that the rallies were put together by grass roots organisations and individuals. They knew that Jacques and CATA were the main rally organisers. They had Jacques Laxalle’s phone number to discuss the event and the Four Corners film crew was embedded on the Riverstone coach. The program also spoke to Jeanette Hayden and Pam Kebbell, from the Facebook team and Anne Easby on behalf of the No Carbon Tax website.
Menzies House publicised the rally and assisted through their website with media releases. The No Carbon Tax website publicised the rally through social Facebook andTwitter, plus media releases etc. The dedicated Facebook team was responsible for publicity through Facebook and Twitter.
There was not one mention of Jacques Laxalle and CATA team, who organised the rally, the speakers, the stage and sound as well as the coaches from NSW and Victoria.
It would be considered ‘boring’ television by the elite at the ABC to mention how Jacques, or any of the other people involved, are unpaid and don’t receive funding – unlike organisations like GetUP! All expenses are paid for by the volunteers out of their own pockets. Penrith Light and Sound supply the stage and sound equipment at no cost.
The message from the interview with the gentleman on the bus, who said he voted for Pauline Hanson, wasn’t lost on viewers. It was a underhanded reference to the much-maligned Pauline Hanson. Another man on the same bus admitted to listening to 2GB. This was an attempt to make rally attendees look like red necks fired up by talk back radio. The chants of ‘ditch the witch’ appeared contrived because this sign and chant is always discouraged by other protesters at the rallies, for bringing the protests into disrepute. Organisers know full well that the ‘witch’ message is always used by the media in an attempt to discredit Tony Abbott.
The reference to death threats to scientists and politicians may also be hearsay. Chris Smith on his 2GB program today said that calls to the Federal and NSW Police showed no investigations of this kind are being undertaken. Another inconsistency was the reference to climate sceptics and the CSIRO. The footage showed Dr Art Raiche, former Chief Scientist from the CSIRO, who openly speaks about the politicisation of …… the CSIRO – something he’s now free to do because he’s now retired.
On the program, Julia Gillard said “What I said before the last election was that I wanted to work for a community consensus on pricing carbon and talked about mechanisms to do that. But during the election campaign I talked about my belief in climate change is real, that we have to act and the most efficient and effective way of acting was by putting a price on carbon.” That’s not correct. Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan both said categorically there would not be a price on carbon, even labelling the Opposition’s claims as ‘hysterical’.
The program insulted the people behind the rally and those who attended. The ABC is too superior to realise that they also insulted Australians who support the rallies but can’t attend. No wonder the Government has 26% approval rating in the polls with the ABC as part of their cheer squad.
Julia Gillard’s reference to the Americanisation/TEA Party influence at the protests is incorrect and shows just how out of touch she is. These rallies are in direct opposition to her “there will be no carbon tax” lie and the imminent introduction of her carbon tax.
If the carbon tax disappears, so will the rallies.

THIS IS TYPICAL OF THE ABC. IT IS THE MOST BIASED MEDIA ORGANISATION IN AUSTRALIA AND IS FILLED WITH GREEN AND LABOR PARTY SUPPORTERS. “THERE WILL BE NO CARBON TAX UNDER THE GOVERNMENT I LEAD” MEANS JUST THAT. I READ THAT BOB BROWN TOLD A JOURNALIST THERE WILL BE A CARBON TAX BEFORE THE ELECTION IT WILL BE ANNOUNCED AFTER THE ELECTION.
GILLARD CANNOT GRASP SHE IS THE MOST HATED POLITICIAN ON THE PLANET. IT WILL BECOME ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS LIES IN HISTORY, AND AUSTRALIANS ARE JUST WAITING TO GET THERE REVENGE. IT WILL BE THE SWEETEST REVENGE OF THEM ALL.
I watched the Four Corners presentation last week. Despite not supporting the carbon tax for economic reasons, I still think it is undeserving of the allegations of bias made by this article. It is true that the presentation was a bit to the left of Alan Jones and the Daily Telegraph, but It was hardly Green Left Weekly. It did get viewpoints from Tony Abbott, a few mainstream carbon tax opponents and a few anti-alarmist Climate Scientists. The ABC may be positioned to the Left of 2GB, The Daily Telegraph and the Australian people, but it’s not communist and vitirol displayed by some people against the ABC is irrational, concerning and fundamentally counterproductive to the cause of stopping the carbon tax.
